2025 Women in Construction Feature - Sara Knapp, Tusk Builders

Q1: What is your current role?
I am the co-owner and General Manager of Tusk Builders, a residential remodeler based in S. Minneapolis. I’m also known as Mom to four kids.
Q2: What do you enjoy the most about being a woman in the construction industry?
I’m obsessed with homes and remodeling, and I feel so lucky to have blended this passion with my work. One of the things I love most about being a woman in the construction industry is bringing extra care and compassion to the job, whether it’s working with clients or coordinating with a large team of subcontractors. Relationships are at the heart of this industry, and I take pride in fostering an environment where people are valued.
I also love carving a path for other women in construction. It’s important to not only create opportunities for women but also to show men the value of welcoming and empowering women in this field. When we broaden perspectives and make space for different leadership styles, the entire industry gets better.
In my previous career, I was often one of the few women in the room, so I understand what it’s like to feel alone. That experience drives me to build a workplace—and an industry—where women feel supported, respected, and encouraged to lead.
Q3: How did you end up in the industry?
I spent nearly 20 years in a corporate career, but over time, I realized that climbing the traditional corporate ladder wasn’t fulfilling me the way I had hoped. Meanwhile, my husband was running Tusk Builders solo, and the business was reaching a turning point—just as I was searching for what was next in my own career. The timing aligned perfectly, and I jumped at the chance to join him.
Building Tusk Builders together had always been a dream of ours, but we needed the right pieces to fall into place before taking that leap. When they finally did, I knew it was the right move—not just for the business, but for our family, and for me personally. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful every day that I made the leap.
Q4: What advice would you give other women thinking about joining the construction industry?
Don’t be afraid to dive in! Every day is different and there’s something new to learn each day. Ask questions, figure out how things work, get to know the team, and learn from their experience. The details can feel overwhelming at first, but lean on the experts, build relationships, and jump in wherever you can. The industry needs more women, and your perspective and skills will make it better. Come join us! We have a lot of fun.
